Some drivers are making radical changes in order to cut premiums - which are the biggest single monthly outlay for many.
Pressure to save money on car insurance has led to one in four UK drivers attempting to take steps to reduce costs.
According to Saga, eight percent of motorists - or 2.7 million people - have "downsized" their car to a smaller vehicle, which tend to be cheaper to insure. A further eight percent have decided to increase their voluntary excess in order to directly reduce their premiums.
Meanwhile, four percent have cut named drivers from their car insurance documentation, while five percent have removed optional extras such as breakdown cover or legal help from their policies.
Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of the Saga Group, commented: "Many more people could be taking some simple steps to reduce the cost of their car insurance. Remembering to update your car insurance policy as your needs change can help save money on monthly premiums at a time when many people are looking to reign in their spending.
"However it's important to ensure the quality of the cover isn't compromised and the policy still meets all your needs."
Car insurance was found by the Saga poll to be the biggest single regular outlay for "many" drivers. On average, £31 per month is paid out for the cover.
