People planning a holiday within the UK this year have been warned that travel insurance is just as important as if they were going abroad.
Travel insurance is not just necessary for foreign holidays, according to Sainsbury's Bank.
The firm said that this year could see a higher number of people than usual take a trip within the UK due to the poor performance of sterling against the euro and the dollar, along with the ongoing recession. Visit Britain figures show that Brits take upwards of 50 million holidays in the UK annually.
However, Sainsbury's warned that people on these millions of trips are just as much at risk of having their luggage stolen, their flight cancelled or any other disaster as people going abroad.
"It can be easy to overlook travel insurance if you are not going on a foreign break but many of the problems that you can encounter abroad can also happen here in the UK on holiday, so it is important to ensure that you have adequate cover," said Sam Marrs, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's Finance. "Many people also simply rely on their home insurance thinking their belongings will be covered if lost outside the home whilst on holiday but it's worth remembering there is probably a higher excess to pay and also an impact on your no claims discount."
One example the firm provides where not having travel insurance could prove costly is having an accident on holiday. While the NHS will make sure the injured party gets hospital treatment, it will not pay to take them back home.
