A regional airline is providing free travel insurance for its customers in the event that they lose their jobs.
People who have been made redundant and can no longer afford their holiday can receive a refund under an offer from regional airline Flybe.
The firm has announced that any passenger who has booked flights, car hire or accommodation in January for a trip before October 24th will be able to claim back the costs if they lose their job. The offer is applicable to people who have been in continuous work with the same employer for two year or more.
Airlines are reporting reduced passenger numbers as people opt to stay at home as the economic downturn deepens. This trend has led a number of airlines to go out of business, which has increased interest in travel insurance as people look to protect themselves in the event of their company going under, research by add-ons provider Holiday Extras recently found.
Flybe's move is being seen as an effort to convince people who would otherwise not fly because they fear losing their job to take a trip.
"These are unprecedented times and Flybe wants to do its bit to keep the economy moving," said Mike Rutter, the company's chief commercial officer. "That's why we're introducing our completely free redundancy cancellation cover so that consumers are secure in the knowledge that if they lose their job before they travel, Flybe will give them a full refund."
