Barclays later blamed the astonishing current account statement on a computer error.
A Scottish student received a current account shock yesterday - when an online balance check with his bank informed him that he was £99,999,998,517.57 overdrawn.
The Barclays statement showed that Donald Moffatt had run up the enormous "overdraft" thanks to two withdrawals of around £50 billion each. After the Irvine resident's wife discovered the discrepancy, he got in contact with the bank.
Subsequently, Barclays told him that an administrative mistake was to blame for the statement - and that he was not £100 billion overdrawn after all. The firm has now offered him £10 in compensation.
Speaking to the BBC, Mr Moffatt said that a shopping trip yesterday morning had confused matters for the couple. "We knew we still had quite a bit left in the account as we checked last night before we went out," he explained. "This morning I went out to get a few things, then, when I came back, my account was overdrawn by that amount."
In a statement Barclays said: "A technical error caused some customer accounts to be incorrectly debited. The problem was immediately identified and corrected within less than an hour, and all affected customer accounts are now showing correct balances."
