The nation is at risk of increased incidents of car sickness as Sat Navs and seat-back DVD players continue to gain in popularity.
In-car entertainment products can increase the risk of car sickness, one insurer has said.
Car insurance provider Esure has warned that the nation is at risk of 'car sick chaos' after driving gadgets and car entertainment systems proved popular gifts this Christmas. The insurance firm carried out a scientific study in collaboration with the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and found that watching moving images while sat in a moving car can trick the body into thinking something is wrong, which leads to motion sickness.
Increased head movement when using a Sat Nav device can also cause a higher risk of car sickness, the study suggested. With 37 per cent of drivers owning a Sat Nav - and 11 per cent receiving these as Christmas presents eSure and the TRL have warned motorists to take precautions.
Mike Pickard, Head of Risk and Underwriting at esure car insurance, said: "With handheld games and in-car gadgetry being popular gifts this Christmas, motorists should be aware of potential side-effects' of in-car entertainment. Drivers and passengers need to understand what steps to take to prevent carsickness in order to make their journeys more pleasant and the roads safer."
