Guarding a no claims bonus could be the answer to finding cheaper car insurance.
Drivers are being urged to protect their no claims bonus to help them secure low-cost car insurance during what is a difficult time for many people financially. According to the insurance provider RIAS, a good no claims bonus can knock as much as 75 percent off the total cost of an annual premium.
The company points out that it can take five years to accumulate the maximum no claims bonus, but warns that this can be undone in seconds. Indeed, even if a driver is involved in an accident that was not their fault, they can still lose some or all of their no claims bonus.
RIAS managing director Janet Connor, comments: "Although drivers are fully aware of the importance of building up and maintaining their no claims bonus, not many are aware of the various ways of protecting or safe-guarding it."
The insurer is advising motorists to drive carefully at all times and to observe the rules of the road. It is also urging them not to take unnecessary risks such as driving in adverse weather conditions, when tired or while under the influence of alcohol.
And it adds that in the event of an accident resulting in minor damage, owners should decide whether covering the cost of repairs themselves would be a better solution than losing their no claims bonus.
According to figures from the AA, average quoted premiums for comprehensive car insurance cover have increased by £50 over the last 12 months to £724.28.
