The UK keeps its spot as one of the countries in which broadband is most used.
The UK has the fifth-largest broadband subscriber base in the world, new figures from analysts Point Topic have shown.
According to the data release, there were 16.7 million broadband users nationwide in the April-June period this year. Over the same period in 2007, just 14.5 million people were connected.
Point Topic's international survey, which was made for tech group the Broadband Forum, also showed that Europe as a whole saw the sharpest growth in broadband users in the world. There are around 120 million subscribers across the continent, 32 per cent of the global total.
George Dobrowski, chairman and president of the Broadband Forum, said: "This report demonstrates how the broadband industry is visibly evolving, reacting to a number of variables from economic and environmental factors driving better existing network utilisation, to speed and application demands associated with the introduction of new services."
Germany is currently the leading broadband power in Europe, with over 21 million subscriptions. The USA and China are the world's two largest broadband nations, counting 76.8 and 76.0 million subscribers this year respectively.
China's broadband market has grown 6.5 percent in the last year - far faster than that of the US. It is predicted to become the home of the most broadband users on next year's survey.
