Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol are Britain's riskiest university towns, according to a large insurer.
Crime hotspots for students have been revealed in a new report from Liverpool Victoria.
The insurance provider identified Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham as the three university towns in which students were at most risk. Manchester also claimed top spot as the place with the highest number of thefts from houses and vehicles.
However, it was beaten into second by Birmingham as the place in which the most thefts of vehicles occurred.
Liverpool Victoria also identified the three "safest" university towns: Lancaster, Durham and St Andrews.
Emma Holyer, spokesperson for Liverpool Victoria home insurance, advised students to take out home contents insurance and to update car insurance when they first move out to university - in order to protect themselves against crime. "When you are starting university it's easy to overlook sorting out insurance when there are so many other things to think about but students can become victims of crime like any other person," she said.
"Some home insurers include cover for students going off to university, so parents should check their documents to see if their policy includes this cover, otherwise a separate policy can be taken out.
"Students with cars need to let their insurer know where the car will be kept term time to ensure their policy remains valid."
