The lifetime tax burden has increased by six percent over the past year in the UK, the group claimed today.
Poor families are paying much more tax than they did last year, a pressure group has claimed.
The TaxPayers' Alliance (TPA) has released a new report, showing that low-income households can now expect to pay a lifetime tax total of £264,000. Last year, this figure stood at £233,000 - meaning that there has been a 13 percent rise over the past 12 months.
Across all income brackets, households are facing an increased tax burden, according to the report. The average household can now expect to pay around six percent more over their lifetimes than they did last year, with the total going from £631,000 to £668,000.
A poll taken by the TPA for its report, in collaboration with website PoliticsHome, found that taxpayers were really feeling the pinch. Just under two thirds (64 percent) said that they thought the government were "taxing and spending" too much, while three quarters also felt that "green" taxes were being increased by ministers playing up environmental concerns.
Commenting, TPA research director Corin Taylor said: "The government say they sympathise with the plight of ordinary people, but they don't seem to care about the massive tax burden that people have to pay throughout their lives. People are struggling to make ends meet, and if the government genuinely wants to help them they must cut taxes."
