The insurance industry is not reacting to the threat of terrorist attacks, new figures suggest.
Terrorism cover is becoming a crucial component of travel insurance policies, Defaqto has suggested.
The financial firm said, however, that its analysis showed terrorism concerns were still not being considered by many travel insurance applicants. Figures from the organisation show that, while a majority of providers offer medical payouts for injuries sustained in terrorist attacks, far fewer accept claims for lost baggage and personal accidents under the same circumstances.
In total, just 63 percent of travel insurance policies were found to offer any form of terrorist incident-related protection.
These attitudes stand against recent high-profile terrorism-related trials. Just this week, three British men were convicted of conspiring to murder through using homemade liquid explosives.
The defendants were on trial following allegations that, as part of a group, they had planned to blow up transatlantic airliners.
Mike Powell, Consultant for General Insurance at Defaqto, said: "Terrorism is not always a consideration that you would even think about when purchasing your travel insurance cover, but you should check with your insurer to confirm the cover provided, particularly if you are travelling to countries at risk of terrorism.
"Our research shows that [there is] a significant proportion of people who are at risk from purchasing inadequate cover."
Defaqto analyzed the travel insurance attached to 976 annual and single trips.
