Around £17 million is spent on repairing damage caused by the celebrations each year.
Childrens' parties cause almost £17 million of damage each year in the UK, a home insurance firm revealed today.
Sainsbury's, which compiled its new study through its own home insurance claims records, also said that the rise of social networking sites such as Facebook might have contributed to this total. This is because the networks are often used by teens celebrating an occasion to "put the word out" about their party - a situation which can easily get "out of hand".
The home insurance firm also revealed that almost nine percent of under-18s parties are thrown without parents' consent, and that 38 percent of all home parties cause some form of damage to the property.
Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, commented: "The rise of sites such as Facebook and Bebo has dramatically changed the way teenagers in particular invite 'friends' to their parties. It's not uncommon to have parties with many hundreds of people attending and when such events get out of hand some insurers may suggest that the homeowner failed to take due care of the property and could refuse to pay up.
"We would encourage parents to warn their children of the potential pitfalls of throwing a party in their home and particularly of inviting people that they do not know well."
