Scottish boys were found by Abbey to be the most destructive single group of children in the UK.
An astonishing 2.5 million Britons have faced severe damage to their homes - due to the "reckless" behaviour of their children.
This is the main finding of a new survey from Abbey, released today. According to the firm, many households are facing a potential home insurance nightmare - as each instance of damage costs an average of £221 to fix.
The most destructive single age group was found to be one to five-year-olds, who made up the highest proportion of cases (23 percent). Less surprisingly, boys were found to cause damage costing twice as much to fix than among girls.
Tony Beckwith, head of Santander Insurance UK, commented: "Dealing with the damage caused by children can be inconvenient, costly and cause unwanted tension if people do not have the appropriate level of insurance cover.
"With more than a third of all adults paying for the breakages caused around the home by their children and school holidays now upon us, we would urge anyone looking after children this summer to try and avoid this by ensuring they have the proper cover on their home insurance."
Regionally, Abbey also found that children in Scotland caused the highest amounts of damage to homes in the country.
