How to choose value for money rabbit insurance.

It is advisable to take out pet rabbit insurance to cover any potential veterinary fees that may arise during the lifetime of your rabbit.

Typical benefits of pet rabbit insurance include the following. However, as with any type of insurance, policies do vary between pet insurers, so make sure you understand exactly what and how much is covered before buying a policy.

  • Advertising and Reward - Local advertising if your pet gets lost or stolen.
  • Death from Injury or Illness - A refund of the purchase price.
  • Loss by Theft or Straying - A refund of the purchase price.

In addition to taking the precaution of pet rabbit insurance, below is some advice on steps you can take in order to keep your rabbit healthy and happy:

  • Keep your rabbit with other rabbits as they prefer company. The widespread practice of keeping rabbits and guinea pigs together is not recommended
  • Provide a mixed diet of grass, rabbit pellets, apples, carrots, dandelions and a good quantity of hay
  • Provide a constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water in a drip feed bottle with metal spout
  • Provide a large weatherproof home off the ground, out of direct sunlight and strong winds. Move to an indoor area or porch in cold weather. Many homes sold in pet shops are too small
  • Provide a separate covered sleeping area for each animal
  • Provide a clean layer of wood shavings and plenty of hay or shredded paper for bedding
  • Provide daily exercise in a large, safe grassy area
  • Rabbits burrow, so ensure the enclosure is sunk into the ground, escape-proof and safe from predators
  • Ensure their home is cleaned every day and bedding changed weekly
  • Provide a gnawing block to wear down long teeth
  • Brush them every day if they have a long coat
  • Provide injections to prevent serious diseases
  • To be taken to a vet if they are ill or injured
  • To be looked after when you are on holiday
