If you are moving into a new home then the landlord or previous occupants should be able to confirm which supplier is providing gas to the property.
If the previous occupants informed the gas company that they were moving, it's likely that you'll receive a letter 'to the new occupant' from the supplier within a couple of weeks.
If you aren't moving home, but just aren't sure which gas supplier you're with, then you can either:
Alternatively, you can contact the M Number enquiry line on 0870 608 1524 to find out who supplies gas to your home.
It'll also be useful to note down your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) - this is a unique code that identifies your property's gas supply. This will either be printed on your bill, your annual energy statement or you can contact the M Number enquiry line to find out.
If your MRPN is 10 digits long and starts with a 74 or 75 then the gas supply to your property is provided by an Independent Gas Transporter. This means that you will need to pay an extra one-off charge of around £40 when you switch suppliers. But don't let this put you off switching suppliers. Energy regulator Ofgem estimates that the average switch saves £100 - outweighing the cost of any extra fee.
