If your credit history isn't squeaky clean and you are unlikely to be able to apply for a new credit card, it may be a good idea to contact your credit card provider and discuss your situation with them. Explain that you want to pay off your card and request that your rate be reduced.
Your provider may agree to reduce your rate because they are more likely to want to keep your business than make you more inclined to transfer your balance elsewhere. Then, with your interest rate down a notch or two you'll pay less on your debt overall.
It's also worth noting that telling someone 'official' about your aims will solidify them and consequently help you reach your goal more quickly.
